Two families of essential fats
Both omega-3 and omega-6 are essential fatty acids your body can’t produce on its own. Omega-6 is abundant in many vegetable oils (corn, soybean, sunflower) and is easy to get plenty of in a typical modern diet. Omega-3, found mainly in fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseed, and chia seeds, is the one most people fall short on.
Why the ratio, not just the amount
Some researchers hypothesize that a diet very high in omega-6 relative to omega-3 may promote a more pro-inflammatory state, since the two fat families are processed through overlapping metabolic pathways that can compete with each other.
